Culinary Connections: Food Families

Culinary Connections: Food Families
In-PersonLast Revised: Jul 30th, 2025
Event Description
From apples to zucchini, the world of food plants is wide, varied, and overwhelming. It’s difficult enough to figure out what to eat each day, even before you confront all the unknown fruits and vegetables available at grocery stores and markets.
What exactly IS kohlrabi? What could I substitute for broccoli if I don’t have it? If my child is allergic to tomatoes, what else
could affect her?
Knowledge of fruits and vegetables and their properties can help you incorporate more variety into your diet, learn what substitutes will work best in recipes, streamline meal and menu planning, and ultimately, increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Figuring out the food family groupings can also pave the way for mixing up your
meals, managing allergies and avoidances, and opening up to new experiences that will boost your cooking skills.
